- Finding the right therapist for you -

Goodness! There appears to be no end of types of therapy and therapist! How do you know that you'll find the right one?

Well, as you search through therapists, you will have a sense of what experience people are offering as you read their profiles, look through their website, even the design and pictures. Take a moment to consider and listen to how you think and feel. Honestly, as much as qualifications, many a person is hugely influenced even by a profile picture! This doesn't mean we're shallow, but perhaps there is something familiar, comforting? Overall, do you get a sense of competence and safety? You don't have to disclose your deepest self in your first session, indeed trust is hard earned over time, but could you possibly, eventually be open with this person?

If you have the time and inclination, you could look up what particular forms of therapy focus upon, and see what resonants with you.

Pragmatically of course, for a regular weekly session your travel would be a factor, especially if you think you'll be wanting to work longer term. I would particularly advise that whoever you choose, that they are a member of one of the main governing bodies (either the BACP or UKCP); this will ensure a higher level of competency, protection and recourse for you.
